How to Choose a Good Yoga Mat: What Really Matters

Choosing the right yoga mat is not just about color or design — it directly affects your comfort, stability, and safety during practice. The most important things to pay attention to are: grip, thickness, material, density, and the type of yoga you practice.

For most people, a medium-thickness mat (about 4–6 mm) is the best option because it provides a balance between comfort and stability.

1. Grip — The Most Important Factor

If your hands slide during Downward Dog, yoga quickly becomes uncomfortable and distracting.

There are two main types of grip:

Dry grip — works best with dry hands

Wet grip — better for sweaty hands and hot yoga

Best for:

Hot yoga / Vinyasa → strong wet grip

Gentle yoga / meditation → standard grip is enough

2. Thickness Matters

Thickness

Best For

1–3 mm

Travel and portability

4–5 mm

Universal everyday practice

6+ mm

Sensitive knees and joints

However, thickness is not everything. A dense 4 mm mat can feel more stable than a soft 6 mm mat.

3. Material of the Yoga Mat

Popular materials:

PVC Durable and affordable, but not eco-friendly. Natural Rubber Excellent grip and environmentally friendly. TPE Lightweight, soft, and comfortable. Cork Natural material with very good grip, especially for hot yoga.

4. Smell and Durability

Cheap yoga mats sometimes:

smell strongly of chemicals crack quickly become slippery after a short time

A good mat should:

be easy to clean maintain grip over time feel supportive and stable

5. Weight and Portability

If you carry your mat to classes or travel often, choose:

a lightweight mat thinner travel-friendly options
